Iraq sentences German woman to death over ISIS involvement

A court in Iraq has sentenced a German woman to death after finding her guilty of belonging to the Islamic State (IS) group.

She was sentenced for providing logistical support and taking part in attacks on Iraqi security forces.

The woman, who has not been named but is said to be of Moroccan descent, was captured during the battle for Mosul last year.

Thousands of foreigners have been fighting for IS in Iraq and Syria.

The court said she travelled from Germany to Iraq to join IS with two daughters, who married members of the jihadist group.

She is thought to be the first foreign woman to be sentenced to death in Iraq for joining the group, reports say.

Another German female, teenager Linda Wenzel, was arrested in Mosul at the same time for belonging to IS.

Thousands of suspected IS members have been rounded up and imprisoned - several mass executions have already taken place.

Human rights groups have expressed strong concern about the judicial process.

The spokesman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar, says the woman acknowledged joining IS after traveling from Germany to Syria and then to Iraq along with her two daughters. Both daughters later married militants.

Bayrkdar said Sunday that she was found guilty of “offering logistic support and helping the terrorist group to carry out criminal acts,” and “taking part in attacks against security forces.” No more details were released.

Iraqi forces detained a number of foreign women as they drove IS from the territory it once controlled in northern and central Iraq.

Iran sentences popular rapper to death for supporting Mahsa Amini protests

An Iranian court has sentenced to death a popular rapper jailed for more than a year and a half for supporting nationwide protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death, local media reported Wednesday . Kansas - A judge has denied a request by death-row inmates Jonathan and Reginald Carr to be resentenced in a December 2000 crime spree that included five murders. The Carr brothers filed motions in November requesting a new hearing to determine whether the evidence supports the death penalty. Their lawyers also sought new pre-sentencing reports and journal entries in the case.
